Year-long NWT Mentorship / by Pat Kane

I love photography. The stories that can be told though photos gives us a better understanding of current events, history, life and culture. It's humbling that I get to share stories from the Northwest Territories with people all over the world. I've been lucky enough to have travelled throughout Northern Canada, and now I'd like to give a little bit back by offering a one-year mentorship opportunity to an aspiring photographer from the NWT.

Why? I know first-hand how challenging it is to pursue visual arts as a potential career, and I know how valuable it is to have someone help you through the challenges. More importantly, I'd like to see more visual artists in NWT communities tell their own stories, and to help build a community of sharing and encouragement for NWT photographers. I want all of us to succeed.

So, if you live in the NWT and you have a passion for photography, please apply - it's free!

*Please note, this is not an in-person mentorship so you do not have to live in Yellowknife to be eligible. All you need is access to Skype and an email address :)

Here's what else you need to know:

WHEN DOES THE MENTORSHIP BEGIN:

It will start Oct 2017 and run for one year, ending at the end of Sept 2018.

WHO CAN APPLY:

The mentorship is open to anyone of any age living anywhere in the NWT between October 1, 2017 to October 1, 2018.

HOW TO APPLY:

Email patkanephoto@gmail.com by August 31, 2017 with the following...

  1. A link to an online portfolio (*please do not attach images).
  2. A few paragraphs about yourself and why you want to be considered.

WHAT YOU GET FROM THE MENTORSHIP:

  • Bi-monthly portfolio reviews
  • Weekly assignments and feedback
  • Advice and guidance on any photo related questions (everything from camera techniques to running a business)
  • Opportunities as a photo assistant or 2nd shooter on assignment work, where possible

HOW THE APPLICANT WILL BE SELECTED:

I'm hoping to mentor someone who loves telling stories with pictures, has talent and a genuine drive to be a better visual artist. The applicants will be judged based on the quality of their submissions, and what they have to say in their short write-up.

I'll be choosing the mentee mid-September 2017. I'm really excited for this, it will be a wonderful learning experience all around.

Good luck everyone!
